Review: 'FINDING SKY' by Joss Stirling (in english)

Finding Sky is a science fiction, fantasy, romance novel by Joss Stirling.

Plot

The story is about 16 years old english girl Sky Bright who moves to Wrickenwridge, Colorado and meets the mysterious Zed Benedict.
Even if she is new in town she soon finds out about Zed's extraordinary secret and inevitably about her own cloudy past.

The author and her writing

Joss Stirling‘s original name is Julia Golding.
She publishes stories under two pen names: Joss Stirling and Eve Edwards
"Finding Sky" was first published 2010 by Oxford University Press.

She writes in a simple and light way, so you can follow the protagonist‘s thoughts. Her characters are believable and interesting. Even her settings are very well-chosen, Wrickenwridge doesn‘t exist but Colorado is a very picturesque place generally. The way she describes the mountains and woods of Colorado or even the decoration of her characters’ homes is very detailed.

My opinion

Sky is a very smart and sympathetic protagonist. What I like about her most is her imperfection. She knows her own insecurities and accepts them. She would never jump without making sure that there is a net under her feet.
Her character is very awed, doubtful and shy, especially around Zed at the beginning. Throughout the story she gets the chance to actually get to know the real Zed without his mask of intimidation and anger, and of course she falls for him.

Zed is at the beginning a jerk and incomprehensible. But his obviously good-looking appearance makes him interesting and the subject of Sky's thoughts. She literally hears his voice in her head.

After he finds out that the bound between Sky and him is supernatural, he soon persuades her of being his soulmate and shows her his secret. Each of his family members has a special power for example clairvoyance, telekinesis, telepathy; the power of healing, tracking, seeking, source of energy eg.

One of the things I like most about this book is that you get the chance to understand why Zed‘s character changes so much. From his actual bad boy attitude into this overwhelmingly kind and caring person especially to Sky.
It‘s not this cliché where the bad boy changes his whole personality, because he finally found the girl of his life; with Zed you can actually see and truly understand why he changes. All the time he was so frustrated and angry, because he was challenged with all this horrible things and now he has no reason to be challenged anymore. Now that he found Sky, he found his other half and his burden is easier to carry when he is not alone.

“You have half our gifts. I the other. Together we make a whole. Together we are much more powerful.” - Joss Stirling

I would recommend this novel to everyone, who enjoys to witness how shy characters discover their heroine inside them.
